Meditating & focus

Sponsor Messages
Sometimes when I'm sitting down to meditate, I'll have everything silent, clear my mind, sit in proper position & close my eyes, and then it seems that my eye lids are rapidly jumping up and down-- I just can't seem to keep my eye lids heavy and shut. Does this every happen to anyone? Is it that I am not focusing properly? It can be very distracting!

RE: Meditating & focus
Something similar happens to me. I don't know about you, but for me it feels like my eyes are REMming out. xD This, in turn, causes my eyelids to feel like they are opening and shutting a little bit. Either way, mediation is supposed to be clearing your mind and such. Try pushing it to the back of your mind with the rest of the things, while you meditate. Part of meditation is to build willpower. The staying power to stay in that state, and practice it. I'm sure for everyone, something happens when they sit still too long. Just learn to not give it any attention.

RE: Meditating & focus
One of the things I do to help while meditating is to focus my mind on a very simple object. Like an apple, or a square, something that doesn't have a lot of detail. This helps me to get my mind settled because I'm not focusing on details of anything.

To be honest, I've wondered if it was my eyes bouncing, but I was so relaxed at those moments it's hard to distinguish the two really, and it seemed more logical that it was my eyelids for some reason. It could be that my eyes were sort of REMing like you said, I've never thought of that. Thanks for the insight, I'll do my best to push all of that in the back of my mind as well.

Thank you, I'll certainly try this technique. It seems when I do tend to steer my focus on anything it is some issue that's been weighing on my mind, and I think I need to learn to focus on simplicity like you've said.

RE: Meditating & focus
It sounds almost like a nervous eye twitch. The blinking might be coming from the fact that you are trying to focus and the excess energy that hasn't quite settled down yet is making the eyes blink nervously like you say. Howoldami's suggestion of a simple item to focus on sounds good.

I know this is an older topic, but I know I've had a lot of issues with meditating because of my mind resisting being turned off. It doesn't make my eyes react, but I do have a hard time just staying still.
