Bunyip or Kianpraty

I came across reference to a bunyip in a pre-release book I'd read called: Tongues of Serpents: A Novel of Temeraire. The author includes some pretty mischievous characters called bunyips.

"The bunyip or kianpraty is a large mythical creature from Aboriginal mythology, said to lurk in swamps, billabongs, creeks, riverbeds, and waterholes."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunyip

According to the novel, they live underground near the water and steal people faster than you can blink.... because it's so fast, descriptions of the bunyip are scarce.

I was just impressed that Australia has a paranormal creature specific to their continent-- not entirely unique considering the wildlife that presently exists on the island of Australia-- but has anyone else ever heard of a bunyip before now?

I had not heard of this Aboriginal creature either, Jade. Thanks for the posting. Seems it may be lore of an ancient and gigantic marsupial that actually did exist.

I can honestly say I never heard of a bunyip. I kind of want to get a dog and name it that now!
