I just read this story and it gave me goosebumps, like you, don't know why it took so long to find the kid. I can't imagine going thru life not knowing where you kid is. I hope the kid is at peace.

Thanks for the story Smile

RE: Such a sad ghost story...
I hope she is too. The fact the kid had been very obviously chained to the tree out in the open should have made her quite easy to find. That the tree actually grew around her body...that's just weird. Bodies rot a LOT faster than trees grow...at least normally. That the chains were quite apparently still on the wrist and ankles just makes this story that much creepier...a huge injustice was done to this child and her family. I hope they have all been reunited now.

RE: Such a sad ghost story...
A sad story indeed if it is true. I didn't look elsewhere for any other postings.

The way I read it, this was previously a very wooded area. "A 50-acre area, which included the oak tree, had been deforested that same year in order to grow crops." The year was 1979.

Back in those times, it is very possible that it was an area not searched or even ventured into due to animals. Obviously, one person ventured in there. However, for no one to have come across it in all a century and a half makes one wonder as to the validity of the story. If she was indeed struck by lightening shortly after being chained to the tree, you would think whoever abducted her would have buried her body afterwards. For the tree to have grown around her..... I know this is going to be gory... one would think that animals would have gotten to her body long before that and her bones would have possibly become scattered. Shudders. Not saying it isn't true, but I struggle with if it is or not.

I was having the same issues...if this is true then it gives me the willies. The fact that an oak tree grows rather slowly and a body, whether by animals or the natural course of decomposition, should not have been surrounded by the tree really. Nor should the chains have still been around the wrists and ankles. If this is true then there were certainly other forces at work that caused this chain of events to happen.

Ooookay...so far what I have found is that this place lays right at 150 miles from where I live...and I am now looking into the seeing about the records for Walker Co. in the small farming town/area of Fairview...if we can manage it, my mate and I may make the 3 hour trip up there as soon as possible to check this story out first hand.
