As the English version of the old proverb says, "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride."

Must be some latter day permutation, the original from "Scottish Proverbs" in 1721 didn't have the "themselves to death" part. Which is itself a modern English version of James Charmichael's 1628 version in Proverbs in Scots, "And if wishes were horses, pure [poor] men wald ride".
