Must be some latter day permutation, the original from "Scottish Proverbs" in 1721 didn't have the "themselves to death" part. Which is itself a modern English version of James Charmichael's 1628 version in Proverbs in Scots, "And if wishes were horses, pure [poor] men wald ride".
