RE: BORLEY RECTORY The History of "The Most Haunted House in England"
One case about the whole Borely thing that always got to me was Edwin Whitehouse. I truly believe that was a case of mental illness compounded by his deep fascination with Spiritualism. The event of the bottle rising in the air and then falling to the floor was reported by him to have two other witnesses...but in later testimony, the "witnesses" only heard a bottle crashing, and didn't see anything. Whatever happened was seen only by him, and he later spent time in hospitals and a monastery due to his illness. His last letter to Harry Price was fairly cryptic, and a bit random..but it almost indicated that he knew he had been manipulated.
As with many authors of these "true" accounts of hauntings, anything reported was embellished. You are right, DB..the more I read, the more I see similarities to the Bell Witch. When you stop back through here, DB, I would love to hear your opinion of the Edwin Whitehouse incident. I really almost feel sorry for him, because I do think he was suffering from post trauma stress from his naval duty in the Battle of Jutland. When Price got a hold of it all, he had to make it even more dramatic, but all it takes is a bit of research to see that all of the parties involved were compromised in some way. "When you feel like a toad on the highway of life... and everyone seems like a steel-belted radial... when you're lyin' there squished in an assortment of bodily fluids... at least you left your mark." ~Arnie Dogan, "The Red Green Show" |
