Coincidence that the moon's diameter is exactly 400 times smaller than that of the Sun? Coincidence that the one second arc of the Moon's rotation is exactly 100 Megalithic Yards? Coincidence that the Moon exactly blocks the Sun's disk during a solar eclipse so that the Sun's corona can be studied? Without which much of Einstein's work would not have been confirmed. By the way the Moon is also 1/400 of the distance from the Sun which Isaac Asimov described as being 'the most unlikey of coincidences'. That the Moon is almost exactly 1/4 the size in diameter of the earth (which makes it the largest moon for a planet this size) and without its precise position at present, life as we know it would not have happened? Too many coincidences to accept as pure chance for me. And the fact that so many of the relationships can be expressed in whole rounded integers (within 99 % accuracy)in the metric system which we have blindly accepted as of modern origin which it apparently is not. All in all, an exciting and easy read even for this non mathmatician. The authors conclude that the moon is not a coincidence of blind nature and offer several (3) answers, which they wisely do not force upon us. The most important thing is that they do force us to think a bit more about what we have accepted blindly for centuries just because it seemed to fit the science of the times. Just as the 'flat earth' did before it.

I wouldn't know where you might find more information on this subject, but I do know of other forums you might visit in order to find more scientific types.

What would you do if you knew nothing about me, yet I said that I'd protect you with my life, then died doing just that and later you discovered I was someone you would've hated had our paths crossed under different circumstances?

It's all just one big *facepalm* around here.

I heart Sandra Bullock.

Due to the elliptical nature of the moon's orbit around the earth, and the earth's orbit around the sun, the moon doesn't always exactly block the sun, hence the difference between total and annular eclipses. The relationship of the moon being 1/400th the size of the sun and the moon/earth and moon/sun distance-ratio averaging 1/400 is the reason the eclipses occur. Additionally, it's our current place in time that makes it thus... the moon's orbit is slowly expanding. Not so much coincidence as it is a matter of gravitational harmonics with respect to the amount and distribution of "stuff" which resided in the solar disk during the creation of the system.

The relationships exist in integer form regardless of the measuring system you use... metric, english, or what have you. They are just that, relationships, and not dependent of a unit of measure.

As for the megalithic yard, it was a construct of Alexander Thom and was an average of measurements taken from over a thousand megalithic structures in Europe during the 20th century. The the concept of the megalithic yard was the result of a statistical mean rather than a standard unit of measurement discovered. Also, there came a point when Thom would encounter a site whose measurements did not match his theory, he adjusted the points at which he measured so as to make the data align properly. Simply put, he did a great deal of making the data fit the theory rather than using the data to test the theory. On the whole, not a scientific approach... at best, pseudoscientific.

There are few things in science which have or will stand for centuries. Yes, there are concepts which are currently accepted as fact, but in a true scientific view, no facts are immutable.

I think it's one of those one in a billion chances that makes us the only known planet with life.

I think this post is awesome, Your a very intelligent person, but I'm sure you already have been told that plenty.
I think there are no coincidences in life at all. God maid it just right for you and me...
