Have Unicorns Ever Existed?
Sponsor Messages My theory is that Unicorns did in fact exist. Greedy humans hunted them down, probably because they believed the horn to have magical properties, until they were all killed. Re: Have Unicorns Ever Existed?
Sure unicorns once existed. What you said about man causing their extinction really made sense. If there ever was a creature like a unicorn, or even a mermaid they would be hunted down.
I wonder how long ago the first unicorn was written about or appeared in the artwork. I mean how old is the idea? |

Re: Have Unicorns Ever Existed?
I voted maybe because I think they probably did exist a very very long time ago. I would expect their descriptions and abilities to become more and more exaggerated as the stories were told over the generations. So maybe they werent exactly like what we see in picutres. OK, so what about Pegasus? |

Re: Have Unicorns Ever Existed?
My Vote to 'Maybe' as well.
Well there's a possibility that unicorns may have existed, because many new animals have evolved from their previous forms to new ones, so Horse may be a result of evolution in once to be unicorn. Like the animals in Ice Age evolved to new ones. For e.g Mammoth to Elephant etc. |

Re: Have Unicorns Ever Existed?
Here's one possibility
Considering the fact that rhino horns are considered to have magical properties, it is possible that some european traveller saw a rhino and heard about the magical properties of rhino horns from natives and believed that the rhino was some type of horse or maybe his description was flawed or fantastic and was passed on with errors. I believe there wasn't a unicorn as we know it today, but that this is a case of mistaken identity, mixed with fantasy, superstition and exaggeration |

Re: Have Unicorns Ever Existed?
Even in ancient Babylon the unicorn was known and worshiped, there have been depictions of unicorns found dating back as far as man kinds history. The earliest written account known dates back to 434 BC. Aristotle even talked about unicorns!

Yes, and since there are so many 'appearances' of unicorns spread out all over the world there must be some truth to it. ~ Questioning the answers is much more important than answering the questions ~

Re: Have Unicorns Ever Existed?
There MAY have been a prehistoric form of horse or horselike animal with a hornlike growth on it´s forehead(or something similar)once. Many cultures have dragons in their folklore too.People and ideas have travelled since the beginning of human history, maybe to a greater extent than we give them credit for,but instead we give the credit to aliens and such.Stories tend to grow more and more extraordinary as they travel from mouth to ear to mouth and so forth.
But who knows? Even if it existed I don´t think it was a magic creature, just a regular animal that´s now extinct.I think we often underestimate the power of suggestion and imagination. |
