RE: Hellhounds
Some might call them Black Shucks, depending what part of England you are in, or the Shug-Monkey, if you live near the coast. Losts of names, Pad Foot for another, not all evil but can bring bad luck if seen, always red or yellow glowing eyes, about the size of a calf. Most seem to conregate around Devonshire and Devon in particular. They are real, no myth, seen by too many for over 1,000 years.

The notion of picking one time of the year to be decent to other people is obscene because it's actually validating the notion of being miserable wretches the rest of the year.

RE: Hellhounds
We have a few local legends about these, there is one at Bungay in Suffolk, and another one that frequents the coast between Sheringham and Overstrand.

Do a google search for Black Shuck, and click on the Norfolk Coast link.

Its rumoured that Conan Doyle based the hound in "The Hound of The Baskervilles" on Black Shuck stories

RE: Hellhounds
I actually found this forum through ‘black shuck’ research for a advertisement project I was working on. And that happened because I am naturally curious about these mythological dogs. Specifically those known as ‘Barghest’. wiki-link here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barghest I was alerted to these myths (for that is all I belive they are) through the music of a guy called ‘Patrick Wolf’…whose written more songs about these things than I care to share here.
If I allowed myself to believe these things existed, now or at any point in the past I would have to say I don’t think they are demons or of demonic nature but I do believe they’re a negative entity…but I think they may just be stories bred from ignorance and fear in remote villages long ago.
I think I’ve lost my opinion a bit in having used my own interpretation of ‘Barghest’ as the ‘evil’ in my latest writing project…amalgamated with the ‘black eyed dog’ metaphor for depression. I could go on for hours like this :/
