I don't find it all too creepy. It's like a photo in an obit'... only not...

I wouldn't mind a photo like that of me in casket... excepting I wouldn't be around to enjoy it... but I AM eventually putting it in my will that HOW I died go on my headstone or grave marker. I always find it interesting to know how people died.

I've never been to a funeral I didn't have fun at...

It's their going away party and I wager they would want people to be happy and not grief stricken.

At my grandma's funeral my mom and her siblings took pics of grandma, I thought that was kind of weird of them. She looked whiter then usual and pretty peaceful. My aunt has the pics I actually saw them when I was there.

I understand grandma was all the way in California and us here in Ontario but your 'last memories seeing her' whatever...

My poor grandma her kids with pics of her dead....

A few year years back when I was moving my Mom she gave me all the family pictures. I found quite a few pictures taken at funerals of deceased relatives. I asked her who they were and why was pictures taken. She told me it was common to take pictures. She did not know why, but said everyone did it.

I wanted to collect post-mortem pictures. My hubby and daughter were not excited over the idea. Hubby thought it was creepy. My daughter was concerned that something could be attached to the photo, and we were asking for trouble. I told them that I would keep them at the office. They still did not like the idea. Out of respect for them I did not buy any.

I think of you as I always have, Ali.....a sweet person and a great member of this forum!

It's odd, I haven't been able to find much on "why".....just that it was a common practice, especially in the 19th century.

I've done investigations in crematoriums, I've taken pictures of the gallows and electric chair used to take almost 100 lives and I don't think thats strange but I just don't want pictures.

Now on a related note I just found this and I think this is just as sick if not more. Having your loved one creamated and put in an urn that looks like them.

I think it is still a common practice. My family have always taken pictures of the dead in their coffins at funerals. I dont really care for the idea myself. I saw some of those pictures when I was a kid and they scared me. In fact I have quite a lot of pictures and some really old ones and I am sure there are some post morten pictures in the bunch.

I also have a few old vintage ones that I found online this morning. I will post some of them here in a bit.

Oh my! I wonder if the eyes follow you around the room. Reminds me of the old movie with the head in the jar, but the jar lady was not dead.

Whoa!! That ashes in the head urn thing is bizzare. I bet there are some out there who would actually do that though!

Here are a couple other old photos to add to the thread:

In the first one the young girl is very much alive but is posing with her dead brother(?)

RE: Pictures at funerals (not for the squeamish)
The one of the father holding the child is just so sad! I can't even imagine......although I do know of a woman who had a baby who was stillborn, and she had a picture taken of her holding the baby. It was a sad picture, and one she kept to herself....but I understood why she did it.

I looked up more about it, and there are still many people who do this....it's just another way to remember the deceased, from what I understand.
