During the Middle Ages, Jack was so common that it was used as a general term for 'man' or 'boy'.
Jackie is used more for girls than for boys.

Actors Jackie Gleason, Jack Nicholson, Jack Black; comedian Jack Benny; exercise guru Jack LaLanne.

Now if you go back 100 years for the top 5 male baby names, Jack doesn't make the list.

Jacob is actually one of the most popular in the last 5 years.

You know, UNR, I went back and looked at that page that was talking about Jack being one of the most popular names............my bad. It was during the Middle Ages, up until maybe 200 years ago that the name was that popular. Like you said, it hasn't been at the top of the list for a while...........maybe there's a reason?.................Too many fairy tale stories caught up to him. Had to change names to protect himself.

Bracket, don't feel bad............my grandfather's name was Jack also.
