Hallucinations?

I don't know if this is anything paranormal or not, all I know is it is unexplained and one could speculate for who knows how long.

My granny(dad's mom)was my neighbor until she died in 2006 Aug. For th last 2 years of her life, she swore that she saw people living in the trees and watertower on the back of her property. It started off as my dad and I speculating that she just didn't have the best eyesight anymore. Then, she started telling us that it was a whole extended family including children, and the men were armed. (Several men and women is what I mean by extended). Next, we hear that they are pulling cows up a pully system to the top of the tower to slaughter, and throwing the intrails in the tower. It progresses even further to the point that they are now threatening her with weapons. This is when she starts coming out of her back door with guns, like everyday, yelling at noone, and firing rounds toward her back yard. My kids started getting scared, and I finally told my dad that he needed to do something about the situation. He finally came over to have a serious talk with her about what she was seeing and doing in response. She ended up turning over an arsenal of weapons to my dad. I thought the problem was under control. One day, she came to me and told me that when I was at work, an old woman sat on my front porch watching the children who were in her care, and that my granny had told the woman to get off my property, and the woman refused. My poor granny told my children to be careful when they played outside, because they were starting to take over our trees, too. My kids didn't even want to go outside anymore. My dad finally had the sheriff take her to the state hospital for an evaluation, maybe she just needed a little help, ya know. She was there for about a month, they started her on antipsychotic medications, and all the time she seemed like her normal self, with the exception of the seeing people who weren't there. When they released her to go home, I went to see her one day, and standing on her back porch, she said,"Look, there they are right now. Don't you see them?" I'm trying to see what she is seeing, squinting to diminish my eyesight to see how maybe vision distortion could account for the "hallucinations" for lack of a better word. I couldn't lie to my granny and finally told her,"Granny, there's noone there, I really don't see anyone." After that, she thought I was part of the conspiracy. She told my dad that I must be a part of what they were up to. That hurt. She never needed help from anyone as long as she was alive. She even cut her own grass, and helped my parents, she was a very capable woman. The mental institution found nothing wrong with her, and that is why they sent her home. My dad's half brother even thought my dad was crazy for putting her there. In the end, she died from a tragic accident, not old age as many would speculate. She even outlived my dad. What could she have been seeing that had her so convinced that she felt compelled to ignore those closest to her? Was it her mind, and the medical community just didn't recognize what would have helped her, or is there more to this story?
