Although many people believe this house is haunted, I am not one of them. I visited the house in 2004 while I was living in California. It's very unusual, but nothing more than that. For those of you who don't know the story...

Winchester Mystery House

If anyone is ever around San Jose - it's not far from San Francisco if that's your ultimate destination - I encourage you to visit. If you're over 5'-5", I highly suggest you watch where you walk at all times or have a headache til the year 2020. Wink

What would you do if you knew nothing about me, yet I said that I'd protect you with my life, then died doing just that and later you discovered I was someone you would've hated had our paths crossed under different circumstances?

It's all just one big *facepalm* around here.

I heart Sandra Bullock.

JThat house is very interesting, and the history is bizarre. The reports that I have read (on Shadowlands) state that the woman continued building rooms and stairways to nowhere adding on and on to confuse the spirits that she believed were out to get her due to a supposed family curse. Click on Andraste's post for the fascinating history of the house and the eccentricities of the woman who ran it. Take note at the time of this woman's life, many people believed in Spiritualism and seances to contact spirits. She truly believed that the curse was real. I'm going to take a wild guess that Stephen King was influenced by this house for "Rose Red."

Yes it is true that there's a short staircase leading nowhere, i.e. up to the ceiling. There's a window in the floor with no glass. It is quite bizarre.

RE: Winchester Mystery House
A short documentary was done in this house and it was just fascinating seeing it even through the lens of a camera. I think you could walk all over that house for days and still not see everything. It is one place I would love to visit.

You do see a fair amount on the tour, but there's still plenty more only seen on a special behind-the-scenes tour.

RE: Winchester Mystery House
Someone remind me to scan and post photos?
I visited in 2003 or 2004 (I forget... will have to check my ticket stub)... took quite a few photos of the place.

... and being over 5'5" tall, I did manage to hit my head on the pluming in the basement. (I wasn't looking the same direction I was walking.) Good thing they make you wear hard hats, no? Heh. =)

RE: Winchester Mystery House
I've seen that house a few different times on some paranormal show and it's really cool the way it's built. From what I've heard the place is weird but is not haunted, there's an article or something with someone explaining why it's not haunted. I'll try to find it later. Also most people haven't experienced much there and if anything it's just their imagination acting op from hearing stories about it before they go there. Either way, it's a neat house.

RE: Winchester Mystery House
Wow, sounds like an amazing place is there a link to it? I myself wouldn't have to worry about hitting my head since I'm nowhere near 5'5"....haha YES I'M SHORT.
How far is it from turlock and Los Bonos California? I think I got those correct.
