Why Lens Hoods Are Important
Lens hoods are often recommended for photographers trying to document anything paranormal or unexplained. The hood blocks the light coming into the lens that can often cause flares and airborne particles to illuminate. The first picture example is with a lens hood and the second is without one. In the second one, you will see the dust and flares reflecting. Lens hoods can help prevent many of the false positives that have been presented as paranormal.

For cameras that do not come equipped with lens hoods, there are ways to make your own on this site (site might load a little slowly for some browsers): http://www.pixiq.com/article/diy-lens-hoods
