I received the following question through Talk Paranormal's contact mail system and thought I would bring it to our members for discussion.

Naomi asks:

Considering what can create a shadow, there would be a lot of things I would be looking for that could explain it. A trick of the light, hypnogogic hallucinations (just as you are going to sleep) or hypnopompic hallucinations (those upon waking), among others. Always rule out what could be causing it naturally first.

But if it is paranormal in nature..it certainly does not mean "demon". Demonic hauntings, if indeed they exist at all, are very rare. The important thing to know is that you are not alone...others have seen things that don't make sense and seem frightening. But certainly rule out anything natural first.

A random shadow with no reason would be interesting to explore but to say it is demonic other than possibility some other entity that may be trying to contact you is questionable. And maybe a person needs to take a look at their fears.There are many more things that would be a danger to you in this physical reality than a possible visitor from the spirit world sitting on the end of your bed watching you at night.

There are many paranormal theories about shadows that have nothing to do with the demonic. If spirits exist, my opinion is that they are not wanting to harm anyone, but rather have simply chosen to stay behind.

Honestly though, shadows can have so many natural explanations, that it is hard to say what it could be. But "demon" would be the absolute last thing I would consider.

My answer to the question is "No". I believe demons are very, very rare.
