I was originally going to criticize at least parts of Bracket's article, as I guess I misunderstood his meaning in his posts in this thread - with the exception that I personally don't think anything resembling a modern Ouija board existed before the 1800's, which the Psychograph was first marketed (and it was more automatic writing but eventually became the Ouija board), I applaud Bracket's pretty concise and informative summary of the subject.

Having used a board for a number of years, in a group and just with one or two other people on and off, I'm of the opinion the ideomotor effect is what is at work, with the outside possibility of a user-created thoughtform or "tulpa", if such things objectively could exist.

As to why boards are considered more dangerous than spirit communication, recording or provoking, my best guess is because it is direct, obvious physical and continuous contact - recording and speaking to a spirit is kinda passive, there's no "interaction" usually, or it's intermittent or vague, provoking is sort of "jab, jab", but board use is a constant dialogue, so I suppose could be seen as constant contact with another entity, maybe more chance for them to drain you or latch onto your aura or something, whatever it is people think they do.
