I have just had a sudden thought, could they be some sort of personal protector/guardian angel? I know they tend to give the feeling of negativity, but perhaps they aren't the ones casting the ill-atmosphere and indeed are manifesting to protect us from it (thinking along the lines when sleep paralysis is experienced as well as when alone in a property). As far as I know, nobody has ever been harmed by one.

I may be going nowhere with this idea, but just sprang to my head whilst recalling my own experiences with some.
