Quick clarification... Electronic appliances like clock radios, cable boxes, TV's, computers and the like do draw current when they're plugged in and not turned on.

However, simpler electrical appliances like hair dryers, lamps, power drills, vacuum cleaners and such generally don't draw any current when they're plugged in, unless they're turned on... or if they're malfunctioning.

I checked on that and yes, you are correct. This is one of the reasons I'm taking a home safety course next year..because there is admittedly a lot I still need to learn about this. Thank you for clarifying. I did do a bit more checking and a power surge can possibly cause it..but not just currents running through.
