Such a sad ghost story...

RE: Such a sad ghost story...
Let us know how it goes, WW...I know you will search until you find something! This story has fascinated me as well.

The way I read it, this was previously a very wooded area. "A 50-acre area, which included the oak tree, had been deforested that same year in order to grow crops." The year was 1979.

Back in those times, it is very possible that it was an area not searched or even ventured into due to animals. Obviously, one person ventured in there. However, for no one to have come across it in all a century and a half makes one wonder as to the validity of the story. If she was indeed struck by lightening shortly after being chained to the tree, you would think whoever abducted her would have buried her body afterwards. For the tree to have grown around her..... I know this is going to be gory... one would think that animals would have gotten to her body long before that and her bones would have possibly become scattered. Shudders. Not saying it isn't true, but I struggle with if it is or not.

1txlady,

This is a bit off topic, but it brought up some old memories.
While I was still a young child, I was often visiting my great grandmother a bit south in Kentucky. There was a tree that had a chain that came out of a tree (I don't know what kind) on one side, and then wrapped around one of the major limbs and back into the tree on the other side..., it was a "Y" shaped branch. This was more than 10 feet from the ground. I guess the chain was hung around the tree long before it was fully grown.

I never asked about it. I just guessed that tree was more likely to attracting lightning than a tree without a chain. Some people who play golf still don't understand. When it starts raining, it is a bad idea to stand under a tree. How long has golf been around? And people still don't get it. I've seen trees explode, and split down the middle from a lightning strike. Blueoh

I just recalled an article I ran across about a strange discovery that loggers found when the cut down a rather large tree in the rain forests in South America. One of the men found about 30 very small frogs colored blue, and still alive. I have no idea when or how they got into the tree. I'm guessing that if the loggers cut close to the ground, the frogs may have burrowed underground beneath the tree trunk. Just a guess. They also found a species of frogs that had NO MOUTH. Osmosis is the only way they could get nutrients into their body is my best guess. Icontexto-emoticons-07-032x032

A word to the wise is sufficient. Some species of frogs, salamanders, etc. secret poisons and toxins through their skin. I'm sure their natural predators got a rude surprise! It might look pretty or really unusual, but picking it up without gloves could leave you really hurting! Icontexto-emoticons-07-032x032

Interesting stories, Jeff.

Yes, I know about the blue frog and some other poisonous creatures. The blue frog was discovered when I was a teen. It is highly poisonous in the wild.... it's the poison dart frog.

RE: Such a sad ghost story...
it's no wonder the tree couldn't be cut down. now that is paranormal!! there is a tree that age that used to be part of my houses farm in the 1880s, i wish that tree could talk. unfortunately it has become partially hollow and is no longer growing up, but is growing out. my neighbor plans to have it trimmed, then she will see if it survives. if not, it will come down next spring. i really would hate to see it go. it shades our yard in the afternoons. there are a few of these old trees in town. usually the wind gets them. have you hugged a tree lately. seriously tho, if the girl was chained to this tree in the dense woods, it's possible they would never had been able to find her. i believe it was revenge for the boy. very eerie!

Update on the quest for facts with this story here, while we haven't made the 150 mile trip yet, (300 miles round trip!), I am getting touch with the horticulturist Victoria Smith to see if she will corroborate this story or not...hope she will return my emails or answer her phone and talk to me. Keep yer fingers crossed!!!! Icontexto-emoticons-04-032x032

That would be interesting especially if she can provide any documentation or photos

Woah, I live in Atlanta right now. I'm not doing a whole lot right now and would love to get involved in an investigation like this. If you and your mate are interested, I would love to tag along and help.
