Many years ago me and my husband were on our way home, it was really dark out and we were on a small winding road. I was looking out the side window and turned to look straight ahead, it was like this thing just swooped down out of the sky.

It barely missed our windshield as it quickly flew upwards. I honestly didn't get a really good look at it because it all happened so fast. But, whatever it was it was huge, it's wings were wider than our car! And, it took several seconds for it to disappear, so it was fairly long to.

From what I did see, it had what looked like feathers and it was a dark color. By the time I looked up what would have been it's head was already over the top of the car. All I really saw was the chest and then complete darkness til it was gone, it even blocked the light from the headlights!

Me and my husband talked about it for a long time, and neither of us could come up with any idea of what we'd seen. I've always wondered what in the world this thing was and have never seen anything like it since. That has been at least 25 years ago and I can still see this in my mind as clear as when it happened.

I've told several people about it and almost everyone has said it was a owl. I am sure this was no owl, I have lived in this area most of my life and have seen lots of owls, none of them have ever been any where near as huge as this thing was and if there were owls that big here someone else would have seen them before to.

This reminds me of a story I read a few years back. A pilot was flying a Cessna over Alaska when he claimed that he saw a gigantic bird. He described this bird as having a wingspan of over 14 feet.

He wasnt the only one who reported seeing this huge bird. Villagers who live in the area say they have seen the bird many times.

I really like mysteries like this. I mean how in the world could a bird that big avoid being discovered? According to biologists there hasnt been a bird this big around for over 100,000 years.

The California Condor (a type of vulture) is supposed to be the biggest bird known in this part of the world and those birds can reach wingspans of up to 9 1/2 feet. As far as I know the condor is almost extinct now.
My first thought, when I read this, is about the Thunderbird.

According to the legends the Thunderbird created thunder when it flapped its wings and lightning came from its eyes.

Thunderbirds have been reported even in recent years. According to the descriptions this bird has a wingspan of somewhere between 15 and 20 feet. When it is standing it appears to be nearly 8 feet tall. If this is true it would mean that the Thunderbird is the biggest bird known to exist in the world today. I did some checking and the largest bird alive today is supposed to be the Albatross which has a wingspan of 12 feet.

As with any legend it is likely that there is some truth in there somewhere. It is worth noting that many different tribes of Native Americans had stories about the Thunderbird even though they called it by different names, had different languages and religious beliefs etc.
Ok guys, just so you'll know, I did a quick Google search and granted there are some owls in Ky with a wing span of 3 to 4 feet, but they're all around 2 foot tall. An owl 2 foot or so tall would have appeared and been gone in a flash. This thing whatever it was actually blocked our view of anything for several seconds. I wouldn't be exaggerating when I said I'd guessed it to have been wider than the car and longer than the hood and windshield. This thing literally covered the whole front of our car for at least 5 seconds or more!
There have been several reports by people in recent years all over the country, but a lot of them out in the southwestern part, of seeing creatures resembling pterodactyls or pterodons. Wouldn't that be a trip if what you saw was something that is supposed to be extinct! These creatures had HUGE wingspans about the size of what you are describing. The last reported sighting was in either Arizona or New Mexico in the early to mid 90s. There have also people reported seeing something they describe as looking like a gargoyle with HUGE bat-like wings. These reports have come from several parts of the world...including Ky. and several of the New England states.
Very interesting replies guys, many times over the years I'd think about that incident and have still wondered what in the world it could have been. Thanks for giving me a few possibilities!

it could have been the mothman but I think it might have been the 14 foot bird you guys mentioned
I remember when I was like 5 when I saw a Vidoe My unlce took Of something you had described. He took it in the Rockies he said and it was at night that the film was made. He was really freaked out after that trip for a while.
That would have to be my guess at night, a large owl. It may even had a kill in its claws making it appear larger, If it almost hit your windshield it must of just taken off and would be moving slow. A large owl can have a wing span of 5-7 feet

The mothman seemed to be an omen of something disasterous. He appeared on a bridge several times then the bridge collapsed. So it can not be mothman. Does anyone know the name of the bridge?
